Rocket and space engineering
We start publication of a series of articles by a Kyiv historian Volodymyr Serhlichuk dedicated to noted Ukrainians who in different times demonstrated their highest Intellectual level in numerous branches of science, technology and arts.
Speaking about the development of rocket and space engineering in the former USSR, the world usually connects this with the name of Academician Serhii Koroliov, an outstanding creator of the practical space engineering.
Serhii Koroliov, who was born in the city of Zhytomyr, is one of the most outstanding Ukrainians whose name will go down in the history of the world civilization.
But his titanic deeds were possible owing to accurate and well coordinated work of numerous oiganizations. And some of them were headed by our compatriots.
Here should be mentioned Mykhailo Yangel, Volodymyr Chelomei, Valentyn Hlushko.
Mykhailo Yangel created a new direction and his own school in developing rocket and space equipment. He worked in Dnipro-petrovsk at "Pivdenmash". The name of Mykhailo Yangel was given to a medal for those connected with space engineering. His name was given to a street in Kyiv too.
Valentyn IUuahku was a general designer of rockets.
Volodymyr Chelomei headed the creation of the carrier rockets.
Speaking about Ukrainians' contribution into creation of rocket and space technology we should remember about scientific basis they used. This basis was created, in part, as early as in the 19th century by our compatriots. They were Olexander Zasiadko (1779—1834). Kostiantyn Kostiantynov (born in 1817 or 1818), Mykola Kybal-chych, who died at the age of 28; Kostiantyn Tsiolkovskyi, who came from the glorious Cossack family of Nalyvaiko, Yurii Kondratiuk, who made calculations for the manned flight to the Moon.
