forward, still another, but the river did not grow any deeper than near the bank. Suddenly Taras disappeared under the water. Ail of us gave a loud shout. A moment later, we could see his head above the water, then he disappeared again. "He is drowning, we must save him," Nelly cried out. Although we were frightened, we knew what to do. As we were going to the mountains we had all kinds of ropes with us. We took a rope and quickly threw its end to Taras. But the rope did not reach him because it was too short. We took another one, and this time Taras caught it. Gathering all our strength we began to pull the rope. Still it was difficult for us to get Taras out of there. When there were only four or five steps left to the bank the rope broke. But Taras was already out of danger. An hour later we found a place where we could cross the river.

THE TIGER WHO WISHED TO BE A KING (Adapted from
J.
Thurber)
One morning the tiger woke up in the jungle and told his wife he was the King of beasts. "Leo, the lion, is the King of beasts," she said. "We need a change,'" said the tiger. "I'll be the King of beasts by the time the moon rises. It will be a yellow moon with black stripes, in my honour."
