ROCK OPERA STAGED AT THE RESPECTABLE THEATRE
The Kyiv theatre goers have got used to repertory surprises at the Ivan Franko Ukrainian Drama Theatre. The troupe tries to satisfy all tastes: they have staged classic play "The Stolen Happiness", psychologic drama "The Sin", musical "The Christmas Night".
Recently rock opera "The White Crow" appeared on the theatre's billboards. The premiere enjoyed a tremendous success. The new stage production, created by Kyiv's poet Yurii Rybchynskyi and composer Hcnnadii Tatarchenko, is based on the tragic events of the Middle Ages but appeared to be most typical and consonant with the events of the present day and future. The White Crow is Jeanne d'Arc, a 17-year-old heroine, who led the French people in the war between France and England. Later she was betrayed by her king, captured and turned over to the enemies. The Inquisition sentenced her to auto-da-fe.
Freedom was more precious for Jeanne than love and wealth, and that is why she was doomed to death: there's no place for the white crow among the black ones, if she cannot live the way others do. This eternal theme is clearly expressed in the opera staged by the theatre's artistic director Serhii Danchenko.
